The image is based on one of the famous "Beer Street and Gin Lane" prints by William Hogarth. During the Gin Craze, there were over 8000 bars in London alone that served straight gin and nothing else....Tanqueray would have made a killing. People in England were getting so banged up on the gin that it became normal for mothers to sell their kids for pints of the stuff...real Oliver Twist like. Hogarth did this print to show what a typical Gin Alley looked like.
